After the Bavarian firm’s cars for more than seven decades with a straight 6 engine, now its on a motorcycle which is officially a new concept from BMW Motorrad division. You find any motorcycle manufacturer every attempting this as its a challenge like no other. Dropping a six-cylinder engine in a series production motorcycle can only be done with a big heart and confidence as boffins at BMW’s Motorrad division are determined to make it work. They have made a name for their models and they have a heritage of being different from rest of the pack. The new 1.6-liter straight six-engine for motorcycles is making its debut on the Concept 6 and although it isn’t clear how much of the design shown on this bike that features many aerodynamic components such as the twin-tipped engine spoiler and the air guide elements derived from the new S 1000 RR Super sports will make it into production, BMW confirmed that the engine will expand the K-Series in the “foreseeable future”. They also revealed that the first model to be introduced with the straight-six will be a top-of-the-line BMW touring machine.
PRESS RELEASE The New BMW R 1200 RT Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 5, 2009 — The BMW R 1200 RT has always been acknowledged as the epitome of comfortable and dynamic motorcycle touring in classic style. And now, the latest version of this unique active tourer, with its significant innovations, offers even more superior enduro qualities and dynamic benefits thanks to its new boxer engine. In its configuration and basic structure, the new flat-twin engine is the same as the Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) engine featured in the BMW HP2 Sport. It has, however, been further upgraded and optimized for the BMW R 1200 RT to meet the specific requirements of an outstanding tourer. With the 1,170-cc boxer engine on the former model already offering superior drive power under all conditions and in all situations, the new R 1200 RT has even more to offer. First, the new engine offers an increase in maximum torque from 85 – 88 lb-ft at an unchanged 6,000 rpm, for even greater acceleration and passing power. Second, the range of useful engine speed has been increased by 500 rpm to a maximum 8,500 rpm. The third improvement is a significant increase in torque [...]

The German auto maker BMW has been studying the Indian motorcycle market for launching its products in the country. Infact in the mid 90s BMW had launched a single cylinder motorcycle, entering the country’s two-wheeler segment but with very little success. As the officers in charge in BMW are excited about BMW touring motorcycles to be launched in India thier research indicates that India is now a matured market for thier products. They probably would not launch 1200cc tourers straight away but 650 YES! Share and Enjoy:
